Ever since Hurricane Harvey struck Houston with record damage in 2017, people have thought through ways to mitigate the impact of another storm. It’s a problem that affects everyone in the region, and The Energy Corridor District is no exception.
What steps can we take as a community to prevent another catastrophic flood? Or at least minimize the damages from one? Thankfully, a dedicated group of community leaders, engineers, residents and other organizations—including the Energy Corridor District—have some clear ideas about what can be done.
That group is Houston Stronger, and the ideas for how we can combat flooding are found in their Buffalo Bayou Community Plan. On Thursday, September 19, 2024, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM, we invite you to join us for our quarterly Public Safety and Security meeting, where Houston Stronger will present the Buffalo Bayou Community Plan. This innovative idea has real potential to transform the way we think about flooding and holds great promise for the future of our region.

When it comes to the District’s core service of beautification and maintenance, The Energy Corridor District is committed to investments and maintenance of a quality landscape in the esplanades and public rights-of-way within the District. This includes instrumental improvements along pedestrian walkways along and across streets. We’ve planted material to help promote the health, safety, welfare and enjoyment of the public by providing landscaping to enhance scenic beauty at major intersections.
We are excited to let you know about our latest planting improvements, which can be seen at the Memorial Drive/Eldridge Parkway intersection.
The District developed a planting plan for the intersection of Memorial Drive & Eldridge Parkway. The team carefully selected plants for the plan that are not only aesthetically pleasing but will also tolerate Houston’s dynamic weather. The plan included the removal of existing plant material, the installation of a cohesive combination of plant material and upgrades to the irrigation system from a drip system to a spray system.
Our landscape and maintenance contractor, Silversand Services, was very responsive to the District’s request to implement the planting plan and coordinated the demolition activities, procurement of plant material and the installation of the new spray irrigation system. Construction activities included heavy trimming of the live oak trees in the public rights-of-way immediately along the intersection to lift their canopies, improving natural lighting for the plant beds and street-level visibility.
As you traverse through the District, pass through the Memorial Drive and Eldridge Parkway intersection—we’re sure that you’ll enjoy seeing the upgrades. The plant material includes Asiatic Jasmine, Fig Sandi Leaf, Flax Lily, Red Rose Drift, Little Kitten Maiden Grass, and seasonal colors on the NW and SE corners.
The Energy Corridor District’s beautification and maintenance ensure a visual appearance and curb appeal that continues to attract visitors and businesses while building community.
CoStar Quarterly Power Broker Lease Awards
We are very excited to congratulate the teams at JLL, OneSubsea, Rimkus Consulting Group and Avison Young on winning the CoStar Quarterly Power Broker Lease Awards!
Steve Hesse, Rachael Hinton Shaw and Wesley House of JLL represented OneSubsea, a pioneering subsea technology and exploration firm that works to improve cost-efficiency and reduce carbon footprint in oil and gas projects, when they struck a top deal in the second quarter to occupy nearly 100,000 square feet across three floors in Houston's Energy Center V building.
Rimkus Consulting Group signed an extension to its headquarters office lease in the Woodbranch Plaza III office building, located in the Energy Corridor. The lease comprises the second and third floors, which Rimkus had previously been subleasing. The consulting firm has 110 offices worldwide and provides consulting services to corporations, insurance companies, law firms and government agencies. The Woodbranch Office Plaza office building is owned by Norway-based Stena Realty Group. Wade Bowlin and Marti Grizzle of Avison Young represented the landlord. Anthony Fritsche and David Anderson of Fritsche Anderson Realty Partners represented the tenant.
We welcome OneSubsea to the District and offer our congratulations to Rimkus Consulting on their expansion. It’s always exciting to see JLL and Avison Young in action.
Granite Properties’ REDNews Award
We’d like to congratulate Granite Properties’ Houston team
for winning the REDNews Real Estate Award for Owner of the Year!
In 2023, Granite Properties’ in-house leasing team closed 60 contracts for a total of over 700,000 square feet, which is more square feet in one year than any other year since Granite Properties was founded!
We’d like to thank the Property Experience Team at Granite Properies for going above and beyond to make The Energy Corridor District a desirable place to live, work and thrive.
Welcoming Deputy Henry Martinez to the District
We’d like to warmly welcome our new night shift Patrol Officer, Deputy Henry Martinez, to the District!
We are confident that Deputy Martinez will make a great addition to the team keeping the District safe, and we can’t wait for him to become part of the Energy Corridor family.
Join us in welcoming Deputy Martinez!
City of Houston Construction Update
We know that many residents and employees of the Energy Corridor have expressed concerns about the Park Ten Wastewater Treatment Plant Project, run by the City of Houston. We’ve heard your concerns, and we’ve gathered the most recent project updates so you can be informed and aware of what’s happening in your community.
The COH reports that tunneling work in Park Row will be beginning soon. While this work will be occurring below the surface and may not be entirely visible, significant progress will be made once the work begins.
Additionally, the COH has heard the frustrations of those who frequent Eldridge Pkwy. and Memorial Dr. and are collaborating with project engineers to minimize disruptions when construction begins on these roads, aiming to reduce the impact on the daily commute for residents and employees.
Finally, construction has begun at the N. Eldridge Lift Station next to the Kendall Neighborhood Library and Community Center.
Engage Houston, a team within the Houston Public Works Department, notes that they “understand that some citizens might feel concerned about the pace or visibility of the work” and that they “are working diligently to ensure all projects are completed as efficiently as possible.”

Houston Growth Forum: The Future of Oil and Gas in Houston
The Energy Corridor partnered with the Houston Growth Forum to host a lunch on the Future of Oil and Gas in Houston. Chris Collins, Strategic Planning Manager for Citgo, moderated the discussion held at the newly renovated Eldridge Oaks building. Attendees from government, academia and the private sector held a free-flowing discussion on how the industry can rise to meet the challenges of energy demand while also pushing for newer, cleaner and more efficient ways to combat climate change. Over the course of the hour-long discussion, a consensus emerged that engaging in working with young people and students would be a key solution to finding and promoting sustainable pathways for the industry.
As the energy capital of Houston, the District was excited to help host this gathering and we look forward to continuing the conversation and welcoming more voices to it!
