Leading by Example: Kiewit's Employee-led Clean-Up at Terry Hershey Park
Last month, over 85 Kiewit employees joined forces to clean up Terry Hershey Park as part of their commemoration of Kiewit Volunteers Month. In this remarkable display of community engagement, the Kiewit team actively contributed to beautifying the local environment and removed approximately 20 bags of trash from the park.
The idea to embark on this endeavor was inspired by Kiewit’s commitment to stewardship, a core value of the organization. Seeking to create a culture of volunteerism, Kiewit Cares Greater Houston, a branch of Kiewit dedicated to community outreach, was eager to make a positive impact following the challenges posed by the pandemic.
"We reached out to Keep Houston Beautiful for some possible ideas," shared Jennifer Riojas, Kiewit's Employee Engagement Coordinator. "Alan Steinberg walked me through the entire process and really made it easy for us."
The cleanup event garnered the enthusiastic participation Kiewit employees from seven different departments within the company. They cleared trash from bushes, extracted tires stuck in mud, and even came to the rescue of a live snake caught in a net. This spirit of dedication and community engagement was a testament to Kiewit's commitment to environmental stewardship and corporate responsibility.
The Terry Hershey Park cleanup was just one of the many initiatives undertaken by Kiewit Cares Greater Houston. Earlier this year, the organization hosted a successful Charity Golf Tournament, raising an impressive $168,000 for the American Cancer Society. They also organized a Back to School Supply Drive that resulted in Nottingham Elementary receiving 17 boxes of essential supplies.
Kiewit Cares Greater Houston expressed their gratitude to The Energy Corridor District and Keep Houston Beautiful for their support in making the Terry Hershey Park cleanup a resounding success.
