To make your home a safe place for you and your family, the Houston Police Department offers the following “Do’s to Success:”

• Pick up newspapers and mail on a daily basis so the home does not appear unattended
• Secure exterior doors – add quality deadbolt locks, a minimum of one inch
• Have dead bolt key available for exit
• Keep shrubbery trimmed so that intruders cannot hide
• Set exterior boundaries such as a fencing
• Secure all yard items
• Use lighting to your advantage; avoid creating dark areas for intruders to hide
• Install and use an alarm system installed by trained professionals
• Display your home address prominently in the event emergency vehicles need to find your house
