In December 2016 the League of American Bicyclists awarded 42 new Bicycle Friendly Businesses (BFBs) to recognize their efforts to encourage a more welcoming atmosphere for bicycling employees, customers and the community. The Energy Corridor District received a Silver BFB award, receiving the highest marks in the categories of education and encouragement, and is now one of 1,265 employers across the United States to be recognized for its commitment to bicycling.
The Bicycle Friendly Business program was born from the observation that bicycling creates more energized, alert, and productive employees; thus, bikes are good for businesses and employees. When it comes to consumer spending at all businesses except for supermarkets, studies show that bicyclists, along with pedestrians and transit users spend less per visit, but make more frequent trips overall and therefore spend more, on average, than consumers who drive.
The District encourages businesses of all sizes in The Energy Corridor District to demonstrate their leadership in creating bicycle-friendly destinations and workplaces, and receive recognition for their efforts by applying to the League’s Bicycle Friendly Business program.
