CarShare Announces Lower Overnight Rates

Working late but using alternative commuting? Shared vehicles can get you home.

Burning the midnight oil at work for people using alternative commuting may mean missing the last vanpool, carpool or bus – or riding a bicycle ride home in the dark.

Now CarShare is offering a convenient alternative by introducing lower overnight rental rates for people staying late at work.

The lowered rates are designed to give Energy Corridor employees using alternative commuting the flexibility of working late with some peace of mind knowing a vehicle is available if needed. CarShare members can now rent a vehicle for just $3 an hour between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weekdays, versus the $9/hour rate Monday through Friday and an $8/hour rate on weekends.

Better still, fuel is included. And there is no minimum number of hours that members must rent the vehicles to take advantage of this lowered rate.

“Most of our CarShare members regularly bike, vanpool, or take transit to work,” says John Nunez, transportation manager for the Energy Corridor District, the organization that oversees the program with Enterprise CarShare. “They like the convenience and flexibility the program offers, but one piece of feedback we received was that the overnight rentals needed to be more affordable. People should not feel stranded at work because they choose alternative transportation.”

A free Emergency Ride Home is also available for CarShare members who log their alternative commutes via NuRide or RidePro. CarShare members who average 12 alternative round trips each month can use a CarShare vehicle in case of an emergency, such as an illness or unscheduled overtime.

The Energy Corridor District is working to expand the number of vehicles and locations where members can rent them. Its CarShare program is designed to encourage alternative commuting by eliminating the main objection people voice when it comes to using carpools, vanpools, bicycles or buses – and that’s not having a car at work. CarShare provides convenient access to shared vehicles throughout the day, available to run personal or work errands.
