Schools in the Energy Corridor
Westside Montessori School
This year Westside Montessori School is celebrating its 35th anniversary. The school was established on July 18, 1977. Thirty-five years ago a small and energetic group of parents, along with a Montessori consultant, worked hand and hand to develop a parent cooperative school in the Memorial area. At that time there were no other Montessori schools in the area. Now, there are over 20 Montessori schools stretching south from 1-10 to Sugarland and west from the 610 loop to Katy. It is fortuitous to say, Montessori has caught on. In fact, it is the fastest growing early childhood education on the North American continent.
Westside Montessori’s growth is not by accident. It began with 25 students in 1977 and has grown currently to 180 students with expansion in its near future. Westside continues to develop its Long Range Plan in order to meet the needs of the communities in west Houston. On Friday, April 6th the Upper Elementary students donned hard hats and shovels for a ground breaking ceremony with their elementary teacher, Board members, architects and the construction project manager. Construction of the new 2,500 square foot Upper Elementary classroom was completed on September 7, 2012. Construction of the 10,000 square foot Lower Elementary building will begin mid-October with completion expected by August 2013. Our expansion is not just about bricks and mortar; it’s about providing a prepared environment to meet the educational, emotional and physical needs of our most important resources- our children. The new classroom environments are specifically designed for our students to flourish and develop a love of learning.
Westside’s 35 years is a constellation of different stages ranging from 2 classrooms in 1977, to doubling in size in 1984 when the school moved to a new location on Dairy Ashford Rd. and Forest in 1998; with 4 acres to grow and develop in order to meet the needs of our students ranging in age from 18 months to sixth grade. We are celebrating this year with three toddler programs, 4 early childhood classrooms, and Elementary from first to sixth grade.
Many parents, board members, teachers and community leaders have continually contributed to the growth and development of Westside Montessori to be the school it is today.
The public is cordially invited to attend an Open House November 8th 6:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m.
